Welcome to Discursia. We don't try to hide anything behind jargon you don't understand, so these terms are written in plain English. Where we have to use a legal-sounding word, we'll explain it.
By creating an account or using Discursia, you're agreeing to these terms, which constitute your End User License Agreement (EULA) for using the Discursia mobile application. If you don't agree with them, please don't use the app.
Discursia is operated by:
Discursia Ltd Company number: 15708472 Registered office: Unit A, 82 James Carter Road, Mildenhall, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, IP28 7DE, United Kingdom
In these terms, "Discursia", "we", "us" and "our" mean Discursia Ltd, and "you" means you, the person using the app.
You can contact us at any time at legal@discursiaapp.com.
Discursia is a mobile app that connects you 1-on-1 by video with another person who wants to talk about the same topic as you, at the same time.
Here's how it works:
There is no algorithm or random matching, and topics are curated by us; however you may leave a suggestion using the "Support, Feedback & Suggestions" in the menu.
Discursia is strictly for adults aged 18 and over.
To use the app, you must:
We verify your age at sign-up through our secure third-party age verification partner. From time to time, where we have reason to suspect that an account holder may not be the age they say they are, or where we've received a report relating to age, we may ask you to re-verify your age. If you refuse to complete age verification, you won't be able to use the app.
If we later discover that you are under 18, we will immediately ban your account and delete your data, unless you can prove your age through a full document check (rather than face-based age estimation). This protects everyone on the platform.
To create an account you'll need to give us your name, email address, phone number, and a few profile details (such as gender, region, and interests). We use this information to run the app, keep it safe, and prevent banned users from coming back under a different name.
You must give us accurate information and keep it up to date, and you're responsible for keeping your login details safe.
You can delete your account at any time, directly from within the app. The path is: Menu → Delete Account → Delete Account → Enter Password → Confirm.
When you delete your account, your profile is immediately hidden, and your personal identifying details (name, email, and phone number) are completely and permanently anonymized immediately. This frees up your original phone number so you can register a new account in the future if you choose. Only users who are forcefully banned for breaking community rules will have their identifiers held on our secure blocklist to protect the community.
We may suspend or close your account if:
If we close your account because you broke the rules, see Section 8 for how to appeal.
Each Discursia call is a private 1-on-1 video conversation between you and one other user who picked the same topic.
You can leave the call at any time. After 60 seconds, a screen will come up which allows you to choose whether you want to continue the conversation with the same person or move to a new person. This is in place as a safety feature to enable users to have a natural end to a conversation they are not enjoying.
To support better conversations and make sure there are always enough people in each topic room, Discursia runs for limited hours each week rather than 24/7. This concentrates the community, avoids empty topics, and keeps the experience high quality.
We'll show the next available session times inside the app, and we may change these hours, add new ones, or run the app continuously in the future. Because of this approach, we don't guarantee the app will be available at any particular time, and we're not responsible if you can't access a session you wanted to join.
We add and remove features regularly as we learn what works, so parts of the app may look or behave differently from one week to the next. We'll tell you about anything important that changes.
This is one of the most important things to understand before you use Discursia, so we're calling it out clearly.
We record the audio of every call you have on Discursia, and we do this for one reason: to keep everyone on the platform safe. Unless there is a report or investigation, no human and no AI ever listens to your recording. The audio is stored securely and automatically deleted within 24 hours, unless we receive a serious report about the call.
We take a number of automated screenshots throughout each call and use trusted AI partners to check for inappropriate content (they do not store this data or use it to train their models). We record call audio solely for serious investigations. These recordings are never reviewed by AI or accessible to humans outside of this strict purpose. If no issues are found, all data is permanently deleted within 24 hours. If a serious incident or report is identified, data is kept for up to 7 days to support victims should they wish to involve the authorities, and a member of our trust and safety team may listen to the audio files for the chat to investigate the report. We never share recordings with anyone outside Discursia, except where the law requires us to (for example, in a serious criminal investigation).
You will also see a clear reminder of this in the app before your first call.
By using Discursia, you give your explicit, informed consent to your calls being audio-recorded and to screenshots being taken, on the terms above. This is required under UK law (the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000) and helps us comply with our safety obligations under UK GDPR.
Discursia is something we are building together. We want this to be the one place online where people can genuinely talk to each other in a safe, honest, and respectful way, without fear of harassment, abuse, or being made to feel small. That only works if everyone using the app holds the same standard, and we rely on you to help us keep it that way.
To protect the community, the following are not allowed:
If you witness any of the above on a call, please use the in-call Report button. You can also use the Block button to instantly prevent another user from ever matching with you again. We require all users to accept these Terms before using the app.
We take reports seriously and we act on them.
When you (or the person you are talking to) presses the report button, we:
Bans may be permanent for serious or repeated violations. We securely retain your email and phone number for 3 years to help prevent banned users from creating new accounts, which is part of how we keep the community safe.
If you have been banned and believe it was a mistake, you can appeal by emailing legal@discursiaapp.com within 14 days of your account being closed. Tell us your account email and what happened, and we will review your appeal and respond. Our decision on an appeal is final.
From time to time you may submit content to Discursia, for example by suggesting topics through the in-app form, or by sending us feedback.
When you submit anything to us, you grant Discursia a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to use, adapt, and display that content in connection with the app and our business. You are not entitled to payment, attribution, or any other reward for content you submit.
You confirm that anything you submit is your own, does not infringe anyone else's rights, and is not unlawful.
The Discursia name, logo, app, designs, source code, and everything we have created to make this service work belong to Discursia Ltd. You can use the app for its intended purpose, but you cannot copy, modify, distribute, sell, or commercially exploit any part of it without our written permission.
Recording the other person on a call, whether by screen recording, screenshotting, filming your screen with another device, or any other method, is not allowed. This protects the privacy of everyone on the platform.
Our app actively blocks screen recording on most devices. If we detect that you have recorded another user, we will ban your account. If you redistribute someone else's recording, you may also be breaking UK law, and we will cooperate with any legal action taken against you.
To run Discursia safely and well, we use a small number of trusted third-party services:
Each of these services has its own terms and privacy practices. Our Privacy Policy explains what data we share with them and why. Where they receive any data about you, they act either as our processor (handling data on our instructions) or as an independent controller for narrow, defined purposes.
Discursia is free to use because we show ads. After a call you may see an ad relevant to the topic you just discussed.
We use third-party advertising platforms to serve ads relevant to the topic you just discussed, but we do not share your name, email, phone number, or your Discursia account information directly with the ad provider. Like most free apps, the advertising SDKs we use collect standard information about your device, your IP address, and your interaction with ads. These platforms may use this data to track you across other apps and websites to build a richer profile and serve personalised ads, until you opt out. You can stop this at any time by tapping "Ask App Not to Track" on the App Tracking Transparency prompt that appears on first launch on iOS, or by switching off Personalised Ads in your device settings. The detail of what is collected is set out in our Privacy Policy and in the App Store and Google Play privacy labels. We are actively working to refine our advertising setup in future updates to prevent cross-app tracking entirely, but please be aware that standard tracking SDKs are active in the current version.
If our approach to ads changes in any meaningful way in the future, we will update these terms and let you know.
From time to time, we may email you about Discursia, for example about new features, launch events, or community updates.
You can opt out of these marketing emails at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in any marketing email, or by emailing legal@discursiaapp.com.
This is separate from transactional emails (like account confirmations, security alerts, or important updates to these terms), which we will send you whenever necessary regardless of your marketing preferences.
We work hard to make Discursia great, but we have to be honest about what we can and cannot guarantee. We don't guarantee that the app will always work, be available, or be free of bugs, as we may need to do maintenance, fix issues, or take the app offline temporarily. We also don't guarantee the quality of any conversation you have on Discursia, because calls depend on your internet, your device, the other person's setup, and the other person themselves. We are not responsible for what other users say or do on or off the platform. While we do everything reasonable to keep the community safe through age verification, moderation, recording, and bans, we cannot control every interaction in real time. We don't guarantee that you will be matched with anyone for a given topic at a given time. If no match is found after 30 seconds, you will be returned to the main menu. Furthermore, we don't endorse anything other users say on calls; opinions expressed by users are theirs, not ours.
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes any responsibility we have to you that cannot be limited or excluded under the laws of your country. In the UK, this means we don't try to limit our liability for:
Nothing in these Terms shall limit or exclude our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be lawfully limited or excluded under applicable law. Subject to this, and to the fullest extent allowed by law:
If you are a consumer in the UK or the European Economic Area, none of the above affects your statutory rights under consumer law.
We may update these terms from time to time, for example if the law changes, if we add new features, or if we need to clarify something.
When we make changes:
We may also change, suspend, or stop offering parts of the app at any time, including the topics we offer, the available hours, or how features work.
If you downloaded the Discursia app from the Apple App Store, the following additional terms apply. We have set them out clearly because the relationship between you, Discursia, and Apple matters, and we want everyone (including Apple) to have a fair and transparent picture of how that relationship works.
If you downloaded the Discursia app from Google Play:
We are a small team genuinely trying to build something that helps people, and we know we will sometimes make mistakes. When we do, we want to hear about it so we can put things right.
If you have a complaint, or you believe we have broken these terms, please email legal@discursiaapp.com with the details. We commit to acknowledging your message within a few working days, investigating fairly, and working with you in good faith to find a sensible resolution. Some complaints are quick to sort out, and others take longer, especially where we need to involve a third party or carry out a more detailed investigation. We will keep you updated as we go, and we ask for the same patience and good faith from you in return.
If, after we have had a fair chance to look into your complaint and you are still not satisfied, you are free to take the matter further.
These terms, and any dispute or claim arising out of them or your use of Discursia, are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
You and we both agree that the courts of England and Wales will have non-exclusive jurisdiction to deal with any dispute. "Non-exclusive" means that if you live somewhere else (for example, in another part of the UK or in another country), you may also be able to bring a claim in your local courts where the law of your country gives you that right.
