The start of a new year, often a time for fresh beginnings and renewed hope, can also amplify feelings of loneliness, especially a couple of weeks into the new year. While many are setting ambitious goals and embracing new challenges, a sense of isolation can overshadow these aspirations. But this year, let's break free from this cycle and explore a global effort to combat this silent pandemic and foster meaningful connection in our increasingly digital lives.
It's not just you, Studies by Gallup and Meta reveal a staggering statistic: over 50% of the world's population reports feeling somewhat lonely. That's right, even in a world seemingly closer than ever, a vast majority grapple with a lack of meaningful connection within our existing social networking platforms.
This isn't lost on governments. In 2018, the UK became the first to launch a dedicated strategy to tackle loneliness. Since then, millions have been poured into initiatives to bridge the social gap. South Korea, with its alarmingly high loneliness rate (a staggering 77%!), has also allocated significant funds to combat social isolation, particularly in bustling metropolises like Seoul.
However, a disconnect remains between these efforts and the lived experience of loneliness. While government policies take shape, the start of a new year can throw the issue into stark relief. The pressure to achieve ambitious goals can lead to feelings of inadequacy and isolation within existing social networking platforms, hindering the creation of safe online spaces for genuine human connection.
The World Health Organization recognises loneliness as a priority public health issue. This means it's not just a personal problem, but a societal one requiring a collective response. But what does that mean for you (and me)? How can we build a world where connection thrives, even as we embark on new journeys and embrace new beginnings? Can we leverage community app technology to create safe online spaces for more meaningful connections?
In the coming months, we'll be revealing more about the solution we have been working with over the last 8 months and how we plan to foster a more connected world.
In the meantime, as we sail through the new year, know that your small acts of connection can make a world of difference.
Whether it's joining a local group, volunteering for a cause you care about, or simply striking up a conversation with a new acquaintance; it's the little things that count.
